Buying My Comics Follow-Up

Back in June, I wrote a post about how I was ending my twenty-four year relationship with Westfield Comics and switching to Discount Comic Book Service as the supplier of my new comics and related swag. Three months later, I’ve received my first two shipments from DCBS and thought I’d share some first impressions.

Hanging Around The Nerd Cave

KHANNNNNNNNN!!!!!

KHANNNNNNNNN!!!!!

When I was 3 or 4, my dad hung a model of a P-40 Warhawk fighter plane in my room.  It was one of the Flying Tigers’ planes from World War II with the bad-ass shark mouth painted on the nose.  It’s one of my earliest memories and probably what got me hooked (get it?) on hanging stuff from the ceiling.  Ever since, I’ve always liked to take my decorating into the 3rd dimension, so to speak.

Like a Led Balloon

I got a whole lotta love for my Led Zeppelin inflatable blimp.

I got a whole lotta love for my Led Zeppelin inflatable blimp.

I’d bet that every nerd out there has one or two “Holy Grail” items that he or she covets but the high price tag keeps the good ol’ “Buy It Now” button from being pushed. For me, one of those items has been the inflatable Led Zeppelin blimp you see hanging in my nerd cave above.

To bag or not to bag…THAT is the question.

Uhhh son...that's probably gonna knock the CGC grade down a little bit.

Uhhh son…that’s probably gonna knock the CGC grade down a little bit.

OK, this one falls well into the category of “First World Problems.”  Even so, I’ve got a minor dilemma I’ve been going back and forth on and thought I’d share it with you guys in a “thinking out loud” kinda way.

The Scary Godmother Doll by Jill Thompson

I know, I know…another Kickstarter post. I’d told myself I was gonna chill on the KS love for awhile and talk about some other stuff.  Then, last night I’m vegging out on the couch watching Face Off on SyFy and cruising Kickstarter…because a 21st Century Nerd must multi-task…when, BAM! I come across The Scary Godmother Doll by Jill Thompson.

Papa’s Got a Brand New Hobby–Collecting Playing Cards on Kickstarter

Federal 52 Playing Cards by Jackson Robinson

Federal 52 Playing Cards by Jackson Robinson

So, I’m probably not setting off any alarms at the NSA by admitting that I like to collect stuff. I’m not saying I set out to expand my collecting horizons, but let’s face it, I’m not exactly a tough sell.

Recently, while cruising Kickstarter, I came across the Federal 52 (Part 2) playing card deck by Jackson Robinson (an example from the deck is pictured above).  I think my jaw literally hung open while I perused the beautiful artwork showcased on the project page.

Call The Discovery Channel!!! A Megalodon was just spotted in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Greetings nerds of Earth! I’m back from vacation and gearing up for a fall season chock full of nerdy goodness.  July was a bit busy with various stuff, so I thought I’d jump on here to drop some random thoughts on you…

Podcasts For Nerds 2–Electric Boogaloo

audio-input-microphone

Six months ago, I posted about some of the podcasts I listen to at work in my tomb-like windowless office. Since then, I’ve spotlighted some of my favorites as Podcasts of the Month.  But in my neverending quest to spread the nerd gospel, I thought I might just go ahead and post the playlist from my office computer.
