Podcasts For Nerds 2–Electric Boogaloo

Six months ago, I posted about some of the podcasts I listen to at work in my tomb-like windowless office. Since then, I’ve spotlighted some of my favorites as Podcasts of the Month.  But in my neverending quest to spread the nerd gospel, I thought I might just go ahead and post the playlist from my office computer.

The first thing I do in the morning after I boot up my PC and get all my work software up and running is to open Internet Explorer and click on my “Podcasts” favorites list. The order they appear has become kind of a natural ranking based on my own taste. Frequency of posting also has a lot to do with where a particular podcast appears. Far be it from me to criticize a brother for not posting often enough, but when you start getting into 2 or 3 months since your last episode, your gonna move down the list.

So, without further ado, and who needs more ado, here’s the list. Hopefully you’ll find something of interest you haven’t heard before. Tell em ItCameFromTheNerdCave sent you…And they’ll probably say “who?”

COMIC GEEK SPEAK
Comics, movies, TV shows & nerd culture.  1388 episodes as I write this. The episode archive alone could keep you entertained for years.

THE NERDHERDERS PODCAST
I featured these guys as my Podcast of the Month back in April.  Their one of my favorites and I hope they keep on doing what they’re doing for awhile.

THE 2 HALF-SQUADS
It’s all Advanced Squad Leader here, all the time. Jeff and Dave are closing in on 100 episodes with little sign of slowing down.  If you’re a wargamer and in particular an ASL’er, you need to give these guys a listen.  And listen up for the 5 or so second intro song for the “What Have You Been Playing Lately” segment.  I want to make it my iPhone’s ringtone.

SECRET IDENTITY PODCAST
I discovered these guys on the Comics Podcast Network, and of the myriad of shows featured there, this is my favorite. Brian and Matt cover comics, movies, books, TV and pretty much everything else in nerd culture. Just like all my favorite podcasts, the hosts have great chemistry and it comes across in every show.

HEX ENCOUNTER
I featured Hex Encounter in May as my Podcast of the Month. I like hexes and I like counters.  Put em together and I’m in. I’d like to see them put out new episodes more frequently, but I’ll take what I can get.

BLOGGING YOUR PASSION
I forget where I heard about this show but I’m really happy I did. If you have a blog or are thinking of starting one, you need to listen to this show and read the associated posts. Really good stuff that helps to keep me focused and motivated.

GUNS, DICE, BUTTER
This show bills itself as “a series of conversations with the wargaming tribe,” and that pretty much sums it up.  Interviews, reviews, analysis and, chit chat. Good stuff.

ROLL FOR INITIATIVE
They claim to be the first and only podcast devoted to 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and I do believe they’re correct. If you, like me, have a jones for 1st Edition, this is the place to be.

THE PLASTIC SCALE MODELING HOUR
This one wins the prize for most descriptive title. Unfortunately, it’s been over two months since Gerald last posted a show.  Hopefully he’s alright and will be back talking scale models in the near future. Until then, all the previous episodes are archived.

NERD PRIDE RADIO
The host of this show, besides also being named “Mike,” appears to be my brother from another mother. We share many of the same interests but, as of this writing, he hasn’t published a new episode in three months. Come back to the Nerd Side dude!

THE LONG VIEW
The Long View Podcast is a great gaming podcast that takes a single game and gives a detailed overview and analysis.  I don’t necessarily play alot of the games they talk about but the content is so good, I find it interesting anyway. So far, my favorite was their discussion of Advanced Squad Leader (surprise, I know).

TWO TRUE FREAKS
I featured 2TF in my original podcast post back in January. The guys heard it and gave me a shout out on the show. Since then, they’ve redesigned their website so it’s less of a hot mess but the various shows they do are just as entertaining.  If comics and/or movies are your thing, 2TF is worth a listen.   My new favorite is the “Garage Sale Gloat” episodes which is basically a couple of nerds tearing up the town looking for swag at garage sales.

THE MESSY GAME ROOM
War gaming nerds breaking down war games and general chit-chat. Like many of my peeps, it’s been awhile since a new episode, but I keep on checking back.

FEAR THE BOOT
FTB is dedicated to tabletop role-playing games. They’ve been around awhile and were one of the first podcasts I stumbled upon on Itunes. Updated often and always interesting.

POSTCARDS FROM THE DUNGEON
PCFTD bills itself as a podcast discussing creativity and storytelling in tabletop RPGs. The guys here cover a broad range of topics that will be of interest to anyone playing in or DMing an RPG.

NOT JUST ANOTHER GAMING PODCAST
Covering tabletop gaming with a focus on board and card games, this one is also a fun listen. It’s a great place to hear about new games and old favorites.

THREE MOVES AHEAD
3MA is a podcast covering strategy and war games. There’s a big focus on electronic (PC, IOS & Android) games as well.  Great content and knowledgeable guests make for an excellent podcast. And it’s updated regularly, which is always a huge plus.

SAVE OR DIE
SOD is devoted to classic Dungeons & Dragons (pre-“Advanced”) but if you’re into fantasy role-playing of any ilk, you’ll enjoy this one.

WHERE MONSTERS DWELL
Devoted to modern comics, each episode usually revolves around an interview with an industry professional.  While I am admittedly less interested/involve with the comics of today than I was a decade ago, the WMD guys are knowledgeable and entertaining. My favorite episodes by far are “Listen to Jimmy” with Jimmy Palmiotti, comic book writer & inker. I frequently have to stifle laughter while listening to those episodes at work.

DEEPSTRIKE RADIO
If you’re a fan of Warhammer 40K and the fluff/lore in particular, and who isn’t, Deepstrike Radio is for you.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Because A) I want to get this post done and published, and secondly, because I want to get this post done and published, I’m listing some additional show links below. Just the links, Ma’am.  Some of these are relatively new to me and some either don’t grab me like the ones above or they publish so infrequently, they’ve slipped down the bookmark list. And, I’m running out of pithy things to say.

THE PAPER MONEY PODCAST
The business side of gaming.

THE D6 GENERATION PODCAST
Everything gaming. Sometimes a little longgggg for me, but always informative.

THE TOME SHOW
D&D news, reviews, interviews & advice

WORLD’S END RADIO
Dedicated to Games Workshops games.

WHAT WOULD PATTON DO?–NEWS FROM THE FRONT
Dedicated to the Flames of War game.

THE DAILY RIOS
Comic Geek Speak alum Peter Rios droppin knowledge. Lots of comic book talk.

ALL GAMES CONSIDERED
Games and…food? You talked me into it.

ATOMIC ARRAY PODCAST
Gaming Baby!

GAMERSTABLE PODCAST
Great breakdowns of gaming-related topics.

I’VE BEEN DICED!
A podcast & blog about boardgames. Nuff’ said!

MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY PODCAST
If you play the Call of Cthulhu RPG or you’re just a Lovecraft fan, this podcast is for you!

SELF-CRITICAL HITS
Nerd stuff.

HOW DID THIS GET MADE?
Sarcastic people talking about crap movies. What’s not to love?

DICE HATE ME
Game stuff. Just found this one recently, but I like these guys. Even backed their game on Kickstarter.

So, that’s pretty much a rundown of my Podcast bookmarks.  Hopefully you’ll stumble across something that fits your interests. Until next time, stay nerdy my friends

  1. This is Steve from “Postcards from the Dungeon.” First, thank’s for the mention. Second, I’m glad we’re not at the very of your list! Third, thank’s for the great list, there are several on here I had not heard of and seem interesting to me. This is a great resource.

    Take care!
