Thrift Shop Home Run

BAMMMMMM!

BAMMMMMM!

I’ve blogged before about the occasional gems to be found at antique malls, thrift stores, and garage sales. In the spirit of Two True Freaks’ Garage Sale Gloat episodes, I thought I’d drop in and tell you guys about my latest score…maybe inspire you to embark on a little treasure hunt of your own.

Had a day off with my son last week.  We skipped a field trip because he’d been to the same museum 3 or 4 times and the hour drive there sounded like a drag to both of us.  We spent the day doing this and that but ended up having to kill an hour before his afternoon Tae Kwon Do class.  The local Salvation Army thrift shop was only 3 minutes away so we shot over there to check out the book and t-shirt selection.

The books at this particular store are more miss than hit. I’m usually lucky enough to find at least one military history book, but almost never find anything traditionally considered “nerdy.”  So I literally said, “BAMMMM!” out loud when I glanced at one of the shelves and found eleven…ELEVEN H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Cthulhu Mythos books. Several were anthologies I lost in the 2011 fire and hadn’t replaced. Weirdly, I had just been thinking about tracking down Cthulhu 2000 because I remembered particularly enjoying a story titled “The Barrens.”  And there it was in really nice condition.  And here’s the cherry on top.  Nine softcovers and two hardbacks: 50 cents a piece.

So, what’s my point?  Check out your local thrift shops, etc. You never know what you’ll find. Until next time…stay nerdy my friends.
