Awhile back, I wrote about the conversion of my outside storage room into a modelling workshop which I ended up dubbing “The Nerd Lab”–a name inspired by Dale Dobeck’s (Step Brothers) “Beats Laboratory.” Well, it didn’t exactly work out.

Shambling Back Into My Hobbies
What’s up nerds? It’s been awhile since I’ve been here scribbling but I’m back…in more ways than one.
The New Banner? Oh, I Just Threw That Together…
Did you happen to notice the new banner at the top of the page? Kinda hard to miss I suppose. I added it a couple of weeks ago but I’m just now getting around to commenting on it.
I liked the previous banner OK. But it was never meant to be a long-term thing. I’d originally composed it as a place-holder for the blog while I was learning Photoshop–until I could come up with something better. Then a combination of laziness and “Hey, that looks pretty good” took over and it held that place for almost two years.
Misc. Musings–October 2013
What up Nerds? Just sitting here on the couch watching Bama stomp Arkansas like a flaming bag of dog poop on the front porch and pondering what’s up next for Operation Get Off Your Butt. Thought I’d think out loud and offer a few tid-bits for my seven loyal readers.
Nerd Bunker Update: 10-12-2013
Just a quick update/pat-on-my-back for making some forward progress today in the transformation of our outdoor storage closet into a fully functioning hobby workshop.
You Down With O.C.D? Yeah, You Know Me!
What up nerds? A big part of Operation Get Off Your Butt is about getting organized. That’s something I’m usually all over, but lately…not so much. Years ago, my uncle, referring to someone I’ve long forgotten, said, “He needs to get his fragmented <stuff> together.” Except he didn’t say “stuff.” That’s one of those sayings that has stayed with me over the years and I use it frequently. It describes exactly what I’m trying to accomplish in my own life.
You’d think someone who lost everything in a house fire two years ago wouldn’t have had much opportunity to get out of control as far as organization goes. I mean, Dude…you started from scratch. How bad could it be? Well, I figured out a way to do it, so I’m going to have to spend a good part of fall 2013 getting stuff in order. The good news is that I enjoy the work.
One of the many mini-projects within that effort highlights my particular brand of nerdy O.C.D. And yes, I realize I’m probably reaching a bit here on the definition of Obessive Compulsive Disorder. But the title was too good to pass up. Anyway, what am I talking about and what am I up to?
Operation GET OFF YOUR BUTT–The Nerd Bunker
Well, Operation GOYB is up and rolling. My plan to quit planning (a contradiction, I know) and get to doing made some progress yesterday (to be detailed in a post tomorrow). One of my bigger projects around here is converting our outside storage room (5 1/2′ x 11′) into the ultimate hobby workshop (within size & budget limitations). I shall call it…The Nerd Bunker.

I’ve mentioned before that I love me some magazines. I’m always happy to get home from another mind-numbing day in my windowless office to find the mailbox stuffed with new reading material. Walked in yesterday to find the July 2013 issue of Aviation History Magazine (not pictured above) waiting on the counter for me.
Raiders of the Lost Stool
No, this isn’t a tale of missing samples from an absent-minded Gastro-Intestinal M.D’s office. This is the saga of a nerd in search of a soft place to plant his posterior.
I mentioned awhile back my decision to turn our exterior storage room into a hobby workshop. Well, a few weeks later and I’ve made some good progress on it (though still not photo-ready yet).
I’ve managed to get most of the junk out of the room and I’ve got some nice Stack-On brand organizers waiting for me to fill them with bits of this and that. I picked up a nice bulletin board from Wal-Mart for hanging inspiration photos, instruction sheets, and other hobby-related stuff.
My Nerd Cave To-Do List
Now that my new home within my home is more or less completed, it’s time to actually have some fun in here. But as you might have noticed, I don’t confine my hobbies to just one or two interests. So, instead of making things up as I go, I’ve decided to put together a little “to-do” list as far as projects I’d like to get done in the near and not-so-near future.
