Papa’s Got a Brand New Hobby–Collecting Playing Cards on Kickstarter

Federal 52 Playing Cards by Jackson Robinson

So, I’m probably not setting off any alarms at the NSA by admitting that I like to collect stuff. I’m not saying I set out to expand my collecting horizons, but let’s face it, I’m not exactly a tough sell.

Recently, while cruising Kickstarter, I came across the Federal 52 (Part 2) playing card deck by Jackson Robinson (an example from the deck is pictured above).  I think my jaw literally hung open while I perused the beautiful artwork showcased on the project page.

While I’m not much of a card player, I do appreciate cool artwork.  I amassed a pretty nice collection of trading cards back in the 90’s.  I started with Marvel Universe cards and quickly branched out into collecting artist sets–Frazetta, Wrightson, The Brothers Hildebrandt, among others.  Unfortunately, I lost 90% of that collection in the fire, with only a few binders being spared damage. But you can’t keep a hoarder…I mean, collector, down.

It occurred to me as I browsed the Federal 52 cards that they would look really cool displayed in nine pocket pages in a nice leather binder. So, I backed the project and have since backed seven more decks. Here’s a rundown of the ones that, unlike Federal 52, are still accepting backers as of this writing:

Bicycle Haunted Playing Cards
Creepy playing cards?  Where do I sign up?

Radical 80’s Playing Cards by Bicycle
As a child of the Eighties, I had to get these.  Tacky? Yes. Gaudy? Yes.  But these are my people and I must represent.

Gods of Mythology Bicycle Playing Cards
These are just cool.

“The Trips and Sips of Thomas Tippins” Drinking Deck
I’m not much of a drinker, but the uniqueness of this deck caught my eye. Who knows, I might even try one or two of the recipes.

King of Kings Bicycle Playing Cards Printed by USPCC
Elegant and stylish for the refined collector. I’m probably most inclined to actually play with this deck.

BADASS: Spades & Grenades–Playing Cards With Balls
If you only check out one of these projects, make it this one.  These are schweet! Vlad the Impaler on a playing card. Oh yeah.

Well folks, that’s about it for me.  My son and I are sitting here eating bacon pizza (it’s a pizza…covered in bacon) and watching Duel (again)…and it’s getting good. As always, remember that when backing projects on Kickstarter, you pays your money, you takes your chances, so caveat emptor. Until next time…stay nerdy my friends.
