I stumbled upon my first gaming miniatures around Christmas of 1981. I was 13 and had tagged along with a neighbor one Saturday night to a small bookstore named, Book Villa, located in Huntsville, Alabama. They had a pretty impressive selection of Dungeons & Dragons products including a large rack of Grenadier & Ral Partha miniatures. I could (and did) browse those blisters and boxed sets for hours.

Model Kits on the Cheap @ Hobby Lobby
My lovely wife needed to run by Hobby Lobby for some craft supplies this morning. My son had a $20 bill burning a hole in his pocket and wanted to check out their selection of plastic toy soldiers to add to his already massive army of polystyrene warriors. The model kit aisle is only two away from the army men aisle but, having already been warned that our discretionary $$$ is kinda light for the week, I decided to avoid that particular part of the store. I’m not world-renowned for my impulse control. Let’s just say I’m the reason they put a wall of candy in the check-out lane.
Operation GET OFF YOUR BUTT
If you’ve been reading my ramblings for awhile, you know I like to get introspective from time to time. OK…alot. I even have a post category called “Navel Gazing.” Years ago, during an argument with my lovely wife, I referred to myself as “deep.” That was one I wanted to get back as soon as I said it. But still, I often find myself looking in the mirror and saying, “Self…what are you doing with your life?” And often the answer is, “Waiting.” As Tom Petty once sang, “The waiting is the hardest part.” I don’t know if it’s the hardest part but it sure can be annoying.
You Say It’s Your Birthday…
So, I had a birthday recently and the photo above depicts the cake baked by my wife and daughter with a little help from our neighbor.

Buying My Comics Follow-Up
Back in June, I wrote a post about how I was ending my twenty-four year relationship with Westfield Comics and switching to Discount Comic Book Service as the supplier of my new comics and related swag. Three months later, I’ve received my first two shipments from DCBS and thought I’d share some first impressions.
Hanging Around The Nerd Cave
When I was 3 or 4, my dad hung a model of a P-40 Warhawk fighter plane in my room. It was one of the Flying Tigers’ planes from World War II with the bad-ass shark mouth painted on the nose. It’s one of my earliest memories and probably what got me hooked (get it?) on hanging stuff from the ceiling. Ever since, I’ve always liked to take my decorating into the 3rd dimension, so to speak.
To bag or not to bag…THAT is the question.
OK, this one falls well into the category of “First World Problems.” Even so, I’ve got a minor dilemma I’ve been going back and forth on and thought I’d share it with you guys in a “thinking out loud” kinda way.
The Scary Godmother Doll
I know, I know…another Kickstarter post. I’d told myself I was gonna chill on the KS love for awhile and talk about some other stuff. Then, last night I’m vegging out on the couch watching Face Off on SyFy and cruising Kickstarter…because a 21st Century Nerd must multi-task…when, BAM! I come across The Scary Godmother Doll by Jill Thompson.
Papa’s Got a Brand New Hobby–Collecting Playing Cards on Kickstarter
So, I’m probably not setting off any alarms at the NSA by admitting that I like to collect stuff. I’m not saying I set out to expand my collecting horizons, but let’s face it, I’m not exactly a tough sell.
Recently, while cruising Kickstarter, I came across the Federal 52 (Part 2) playing card deck by Jackson Robinson (an example from the deck is pictured above). I think my jaw literally hung open while I perused the beautiful artwork showcased on the project page.
Misc. Musings–August 2013
Greetings nerds of Earth! I’m back from vacation and gearing up for a fall season chock full of nerdy goodness. July was a bit busy with various stuff, so I thought I’d jump on here to drop some random thoughts on you…
